North Reading Community Band Concert July 16
The North Reading Community Band will perform a free concert Thursday July 16, 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Clarke Park, weather permitting. This free concert is the first the band will play for the town this summer. No rain date is scheduled.
The performance has become an annual event for the Martins Pond Association. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Some attendees even come by watercraft. Judith Allen will conduct the 20 piece concert band and has planned an entertaining program for all musical tastes.
The group’s repertoire includes music from Johann Strauss and Maurice Ravel. A suite of Welsh folk songs, Zampa Overture by Ferdinand Herold, Symphonic Rhapsody by Warren Barker, Amazing Grace, Fantasy on Yankee Doodle, playful variations on the Yankee Doodle and selections from the Disney animated classic, Aladdin are all scheduled for the performance. A selection entitled Mambo Greats will be featured. It includes works by Tito Puente, Prez Prado, and Pablo Ruiz, including tastes of Ran Kan Kan, Mambo No 5, Sway, and Mambo Jambo.
There will be a brief intermission during which “No Reading” the improvisational Dixieland band-within-the-band will perform Careless Love and a Dixie version of Old Rugged Cross, the latter arranged by North Reading’s own David Larrick.
