April 2010 North Reading Town Meeting voted to approve

North Reading Stormwater Infiltration Project:
Reaching Out to Address Runoff

The Town of North Reading, in collaboration with the Martins Pond Reclamation Study Committee and Dr. Jon Lyon of Merrimack College, were awarded a Section 319 Non-Point Source Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection in 2009.

Stormwater and other types of runoff wash pollutants into the waters of the pond. One way to mitigate this problem is to encourage infiltration of runoff close to the source. The targeted goals of the grant are to improve infiltration and water quality by reducing storm water runoff, as well as providing for public outreach and education.



Project tasks include:

1. North Street
2. J.T. Hood School
3. Rain Gardens
4. Outreach and education

PROJECT COST: $328,335
FUNDING: $ 190,500 Federal funds via MASS DEP
MATCH: $ 137,835 labor, services, and Town Meeting appropriation
DURATION: July 1 2010 – June 30, 2013
